Solved

Seems that they borrowed from R' Amram Gaon's siddur. I suppose I should have read the introductory sections of the book before complaining about it.

Ah well.

For some stupid reason I left all my Sim Shalom's in the US (though I have plenty of other siddurim here)

From the way the choice is explained in the introduction, I think they just preferred what it said. That's generally Sim Shalom's MO when choosing between minhagim. (They occasionally do it when the predominant minhag appears to be based upon a textual corruption, as in their text for Yigdal, but that doesn't seem to be the case here.)
