Though reports are denied . . .
. . . I have to wonder what will happen when Arafat comes to be verifiably dead.
He hasn't transferred any of his powers, and I don't think there's a system by which they would fall automatically on someone else. Ahmed Qurei and Mahmud Abbas (a.k.a. Abu Mazen) both want in. Will a Palestinian succession dispute add more problems to this mess?
Or are his powers null and void in the first place?

I always had the impression that he wasn't someone with the huegest of authority, just the guy who was sometimes willing to negotiate. I mean, imagine what could be accomplished if Hamas could be persuaded to talk, even tentatively. They have authority.
Also hard to say, because any change in leadership at this point might be a good thing for everyone, however chaotic the process.
